QuickBooks Error 15271: How to Fix the Payroll Update Error

Error 15271 shows up during a payroll tax table update, usually with a message like “The payroll update did not complete successfully. A component required to install this update is missing.”

Steps to fix it

1. Close all background programs, especially antivirus software, temporarily — some security software interferes with QuickBooks update files.
2. Rename the QuickBooks update folder. Navigate to the QuickBooks installation folder and rename the Components or download folder so QuickBooks rebuilds it on the next update attempt.
3. Run QuickBooks as an administrator and try the payroll update again (right-click the QuickBooks icon → Run as administrator).
4. Update QuickBooks itself first. Help → Update QuickBooks Desktop, then retry the payroll update.
5. Use the QuickBooks Tool Hub’s Program Problems tab (available from Intuit’s official site) to run the Quick Fix my Program tool.
